I found this interesting because I normally say 'out of town'. Maybe it's like how those of us on the West coast go to the beach while people on the East coast go to the shore.

I live in San Francisco, so I wouldn't really consider it a town, though I've used both those terms interchangeably .

personally i consider out of town to be gone for more than a day, and out of the city to be sitting in traffic
