greetings. our current vent subscription is set to expire on the 11th. the cost to renew for another year is $113.40. i'm hoping everyone can contribute $5 or $10 so that the cost is minimal to everyone. i'll post a paypal account to send contributions to once i figure out what it is :)
thanks!

See if we can get crusher to get ahold of John and see if there is any money left from last years re-up.

His phone is turned off and we really don't know how to find him or how to get a hold of him. I'll leave a comment on his Facebook page. Maybe he'll see that.

That was during Benvolo's Reign of Terror (TM), there's a chance John may have given him access. Someone keep an eye out.

Yeah, I don't remember how much we even got back then. I know it was a little more than enough to cover it.

payments can now hopefully be sent through paypal to: forgedallianceguild@gmail.com
it should be noted that transfers directly from your paypal balance or bank account are free, while there is a fee for paying with a credit or debit card. i'll keep a running total of contributions in the top post. if anyone has any questions, please let me know.
thanks!

greetings. as you may or may not have noticed, the vent server is now offline. i'm not sure if people don't have any interest to keep it going, don't have the extra cash at the moment, or what, but on the bright side this has prompted us to look into a free open source server to use as alternative. if that works out well, i will just return the money people people contributed so far. thanks for your patience on this, i'll post an update when we have a server set up.

Just keep this thread open and keep collecting until the amount is reached. We have other servers that we can use temporarily. Rathr and I will kick in some money when we get caught up. We took a lot of vacations in August and spent a lot of money so its going to take us a paycheck or two to catch up. Also, I don't know what size server you are getting but we probably dont need anything bigger then a 25person vent anymore. 2 10mans is probably the most we'd have online. :)

greetings. the open source vent alternative we've decided to try is called mumble (client) / murmur (server). it is similar to vent, except it's free and it doesn't have any limitations.
you can download it here: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/

you'll want to get the 1.2.2 (stable) version for whichever os you're using.

for the installation, you should only need the mumble (client) box checked, as we shouldn't need backwards compatibility.

when configuring the sound card, most the of the default setttings should be fine. you can set a push to talk key if you want, and don't need to send usage statistics unless you want to.

the certificate creation isn't very important, you can just have it create one automatically.

when the server window pops up, you'll need to add our new server, which is provided courtesy of mike / fargol / heimlorn. the address and login information is in the guild info in game.

upon connecting the first time, just click yes on the certificate error, and then enter the password.

i haven't played with the settings much yet, or actually talked to anyone, but i think this should work ok.

please give it a try and see what you think. if you have any issues with installation, or this alternative in general, please let me know. thanks!

i haven't heard much of anything one way or the other about mumble / murmur, and i personally haven't had a chance to use it for much of anything, but unless i hear otherwise i'm assuming it will work for us. i refunded the money that people contributed for vent, if you don't get it back soonish please let me know.

I got mine back today.
I think I have it setup, but I haven't had an opportunity to talk with anyone on it yet to really try it out.

Friday I am renting a 25 man ventrilo server from gameservers.com, it's only $6.95 a month. I will repost once it is set up and address admin functions to FA officers. I have used gameservers extensively in the past for ventrilo servers, Call of Duty and Unreal Tournament series servers, the latency was always great as was the service. I will be basing the Vent server in Dallas.

THis is The Veg,
Faqna and i use the new mumble for arenas and it is actually really nice. we also used it for ganking horde in Thrallmar. I think we should persue the new mumble. It is a little difficult to get going but once it is going it is super nice. Also it doesnt cost anyone any money. This is just my two cents but i actually like the mumble better than vent. i think we are just used to vent and dont want to change. but free is better, and the voice quality seemed the same(better for me as sometimes i cant hear jim on vent but i could on mumble).

true free is better but when u start inviting others (non-guildies) etc.. who don't already have it installed and etc.. well.. you know.. . In any case really $6.95 a month I think I can afford that. As well i do plan on sticking around awhile.
